Leavenworth calls itself the First City of Kansas, and its housing shows that history. Near downtown and the riverfront by Leavenworth Landing Park, many homes are Victorians and other late 1800s and early 1900s houses with tall, steep, multi-pitch roofs. Around them, later neighborhoods fill in with mid-century ranches and newer builds, and to the south the city runs into Lansing.
The setting adds its own challenges. Leavenworth sits on the bluffs above the west bank of the Missouri River, so wind off the river valley is a regular part of life, and the hilly streets send runoff downhill quickly. Mature oaks, maples and elms shade the older blocks, and cottonwoods along the river bottoms shed fluff every early summer.
